Travel sketchbooks
I always travel with a sketchbooks, some watercolors and pencils.
Sketching outdoors can be challenging and especially in India, where you tend to attract large crowds of children. I thought they were fascinated by seeing what I was drawing, but just as interesting to them was to watch someone draw with their left hand.
Illustration
I currently live in Portland Oregon. As part of being a designer, sometimes it’s more interesting and engaging to use illustration to tell a story. The work shown here is a sampling of illustrations I was commissioned to do for advertising, editorial and education.
The illustration method ranges from digital to using ancient drawing methods such as applying wet pigments to paper and drawing using things called pencils.
For those of you familiar with ancient writing tools, they were made of wood and contained small cylinders of poisonous lead.
Michael Reardon
A native of Cleveland Ohio, Michael grew up breathing the fumes of the steel mills and chemical plants of the city, while enjoying the small town life of his neighborhood in Berea Ohio.
Michael worked as a designer in Cleveland for many years, then moved to Singapore to work for Viscom, Singapore’s only female owned and operated sign firm. From there he migrated to Hong Kong to work at Steiner and Associates, before embarking on a one and a half year backpacking tour through southeast Asia.
Unable to pay for a bus ticket back to Cleveland, he settled in Portland Oregon and started his own company.
Michael’s design, illustration, and advertising work has been recognized in Wired Magazine, the International Typography Show Archive, Print, and Communication Arts. and the local Portland Advertising Federation Rosey awards.
Michael Reardon is the creative director and owner of Michael Reardon Design, a communication design firm in Portland Oregon.
